Have you ever wondered why things turn out the way they do? Is it luck that showers upon a person with good fortune? Or is it written in the stars, as some people say. Perhaps the Fates are at hand, or the Universe playing out what is already imprinted on the movie reel of life? I’m not entirely sure, but I’ve learned not to question it, rather, be thankful of my fortunes, whatever they may be, big or small and learn from my misfortunes.
Yesterday was an absolutely gorgeous day, the warm sun was kissing my cheeks on my way to Starbuck’s to meet up with the rest of the HPI group for our Scouting Mission to Sutterville and I-5 and Globe Mill. There were about fifteen people there, some I knew from previous HPI meetings, such as Donna Reynolds, Robin Kanstein, Shauna Kinchen and Angel Kesti. Others, I was meeting for the first time like Holly DeLaughter and Michele Stump, Sparky Parker and some new people. To my amazement, one of the new people there was the principal of the Junior High my kids went to last year! Small world, but I accept everything that is given to me as a fortune. Robert Mabalot, Paul Orlando, Leah Cuadra, Julie Robinson and Jon Almada were also there.
So why do I talk about luck and fortune? Well this day, it was a surprise from Paul Dale Roberts, who at first sounded like we were about to be given some terrible news. We were. We could not go to Globe Mill as planned due to many “No Trespassing” signs. But you know, I’m grateful we didn’t go, because I really don’t look good in County Jail House Orange - just not my color. Paul then informs us we will be doing a residential haunting. Ahhhh, there’s the surprise. You should have seen the faces light up in Starbucks that afternoon, everyone was looking at Paul. Even the elderly woman reading a newspaper nearby tried to ignore Paul’s briefing about the I-5 Killer, Randall Woodfield and I-5 Strangler, Roger Kibbe, but couldn’t.
Randall Woodfield, who was quite the handsome man, had everything going for him. He posed for Playgirl magazine, and he was even drafted by the Green Bay Packers until he exposed himself about 8 times. They had to let him go. Randall Woodfield would sodomize his victims, rape them and then shoot them dead. Not your typical football player is he?
Then there’s Roger Kibbe who was I believe, rather sick. He took his delight in picking up women, and when they were in his car, he’d take out scissors from the glove box and snip at their clothes. I couldn’t even imagine, as a woman, what he would be saying to these poor women as he’s snipping those scissors. He would then rape and strangle his victims to their death.
Now, here are the lot of us listening to Paul in the middle of Starbucks talking about murderers. I notice that a young teenager who is waiting for her drink is also watching…and listening, until her mother drags her out. I turn my gaze back to the elderly woman sitting quietly behind Paul with her paper who was trying to ignore us. She tried and tried, but her newspaper kept lowering and her eyes kept darting between all of us who were attentively listening to Paul. Hang on, maybe this little old lady was actually trying to find an escape route away from us!
Our first stop was I-5 and Sutterville where a victim was found, but who she was a victim of isn’t entirely clear. Woodfield and Kibbe were killing about the same time period and the same area. To this day, it isn’t exactly clear which I-5 deviant killed this victim. Once out of the car, I found myself wanting to head away from the group. The equipment I have is my audio digital recorder, which I tagged and began some EVP work. I kept telling Robin I was drawn to head south on the bike trail. Going with my instincts, we head this way. We went south about 30 yards when I saw an abandoned boat on the west side of the river, kipped over like it’s ready to sink. I recognize it immediately. I worked as a bartender on this boat about 4 years ago. The owner shortly died after my last gig on New Years Eve 2003, on that boat. He died by falling overboard and drowning where the boat now sits. See how the Universe works? I said “Hi” to the owner and both Robin and I headed back toward the rest of the group. In playing my recordings back, it was too loud by the freeway to draw any EVPs out.
Our next stop would be the residential haunting in Orangevale with Bogey the Ghost Dog. At this scouting mission, Cheri Vincent joined our group. Again, there were just too many people in order to draw any EVPs out. If I did catch something, it couldn’t be heard. However, during our stay at this residence, Julie Robinson asked for the spirit to tap 3 times, which it did. Holly DeLaughter caught on her trusty Rebel camera, the most unusual orb flying across the backyard in a west/east pattern. It seemed there was some sort of intelligent paranormal activity happening here this night. While most of the members were outside, Shauna Kinchen and I went inside. We began to smell a very strong perfume smell in the hallway. We followed it in the master bedroom, the cat room, bathroom and office. But the strongest scents were in the hallway and master bedroom. It seemed to loop around those areas.
People began to come in the house when word spread we were smelling this strong floral perfume. In no time, there were cameras in Shauna’s and my face popping off their flashes. I felt like a silver ball in a pinball game with every flash that went off. Other people began to smell the perfume in the hallway as well as the bedroom. It was so strong it burned not only the back of my throat but other people’s as well and it burned my eyes as well as Jon Almada’s. I had to step outside for some fresh air, and Shauna was feeling a bit claustrophobic so she joined me.
Word now started to spread that Angel Kesti is the recipient of the top prize of catching things paranormal on camera. A full body apparition. You could see the face, including the eyes, nose and mouth as well as the body of this apparition. I can’t wait until she posts it for all of you to see!
Shauna and I return to the master bedroom and begin talking to what we were told by Donna Reynolds and Jon Almada, a 6 year old boy. We also believe there is a woman due to the perfume smell. Shauna tries to provoke the little boy by telling him we liked to play, and if he could play with us. She asks him to touch her backpack or her hair. We are then joined by Robin Kanstein and Jon Almada. Shortley thereafter, Angel Kesti and the homeowner, Jeanette. The strong perfume smell is alternating between Shauna and myself, like it was playing tag. Maybe he was playing with us, maybe he wasn’t. We close the door so we can hear a little bit better – although it was still too loud for EVP’s. Soon thereafter, Cheri Vincent joins us.
XXXX Between Shauna and myself, we are asking this little boy to do something, to prove to us he was there with us. Robin and Jon, both sensitives, felt he was hiding….behind me. Jon felt the little boy was hiding behind me because I was the closest looking to his mother. I have to admit, my backside was getting very, very cold. Again, the cameras were popping their flashbulbs in my face, and I am positive there are some very unflattering pictures in some of those cameras that were there last night. Please, destroy those pictures if you will… Between the flashing bulbs and the strong smell of perfume, not only did I have a headache, but I was getting dizzy and my stomach was upset.
Both Robin and Jon felt the little boy was getting bored with us, so Shauna wanted to play again. I then announced we could play a game of Duck, Duck, Goose! what with 7 of us in the room, why not? But the spirit had to be ‘it’. Shortly thereafter, Shauna was touched across the face, as well as the homeowner, Jeanette. Next came Jon, who was touched on the back of his neck, followed by Cheri who felt cold on her lower legs. It seemed to make its rounds, but it skipped over Angel. Wonder why? It continued on to Robin, touching her on her head, then me, touching me you guessed it, my backside. This is where the cold stayed, until we opened the door and Shauna felt a cold spot laying on the left side of the bed. Others came over to feel the cold spot including Paul Dale Roberts. All in all, we were in that room for about 45 minutes playing with this spirit.
At one point, I switched my audio recorder from my left hand to the right, scratched my nose and was overcome with the perfume smell. I smelled my fingers of my left hand and was amazed. It was covered in perfume. I had Shauna smell my fingers to make sure I wasn’t losing my mind. She smelled it as well. About 5 minutes later, the smell was gone.
After leaving the bedroom, Cheri announces she found where the perfume smell was coming from. A teddy bear from the cat room. It was shoved in my face, which I took a sniff – remind me not to do that again, huh? I had to jerk my head away because it was too strong. Jeanette, the homeowner smelled it as well and was amazed. She couldn’t figure out how this bear could smell like that. Neither could Shauna or myself, because we were in that room a couple of times and never smelled the perfume in there.
At this time in the evening, Paul Dale Roberts asks me if I’d like to lead some people out in the backyard. Huh, he must be a mind reader because I was just planning on heading out there. So off I went with Robin Kanstein, Shauna Kinchen, Donna Reynolds, Jon Almada, Robert Mabalot and Paul Orlando. Robin beelines it to a gated area, resembling a fenced off garden in the corner. She feels something is about 3 feet out from her. Maybe it’s Bogey the Ghost Dog’s burial site? Not sure, the homeowners don’t’ know where on the property he is buried.
I ask Shauna to join me over to the gazebo area, something was pulling me that way. Do I want to go alone, are you crazy? Shauna was the winner by virtue of standing next to me. So I dragged her with me. We both didn’t get a great feeling from this area. So I called Robin over to see what she would feel. She felt something on the north/east corner of the gazebo, possibly in the water as well. I asked her about the opposite corner, and she immediately left the area saying it was a “go away” feeling. As if the spirit was telling her “mine!”. I was intrigued, and called Both Jon and Donna over.
Both Jon and Donna sat down at the table under the gazebo and felt a pleasant, peaceful feeling. Jon took his EMF meter out and wasn’t getting any kinds of readings what-so-ever. He got up, as did Donna, and they walked to the other side of the pool. I went back into the gazebo but turned right back out, I couldn’t help the feeling of “Get out, mine!” Hey, I’m not going to argue with something I can’t see, so I got out. Shauna followed me. I stopped just outside the gazebo, watching Jon and Donna when I feel a hand grab my arm with such force, it draws my breath in. It was Shauna. She was pointing at the chair we just passed. It was moving. Now, I know I didn’t touch the chair, and I immediately asked Shauna if she had. She swears up and down she didn’t. I call Jon and Donna over saying the chair was moving, they come over and shine a flashlight on it. I’m telling you, it was the eeriest thing I saw. Paul Dale Roberts comes out and begins to speak, but I cut him off by telling him to get over here because the chair was moving. Before I knew it, everyone ran out watching the chair move. Now, to describe the movement would be the chair was one of those wrought iron like chairs with four independent legs. The back of the chair was bouncing back and forth at a degree of about ½ inch in the beginning. It lasted for a solid 2 ½ minutes before it completely diminished. We tried to recreate the action by bumping into it, one time pretty hard. All tests showed the bounce reaction dissipating within 1 minute to 1 ½ minutes. I can’t explain what happened with that chair, other than logically, it doesn’t make sense. I know I didn’t bump that chair, nor did Shauna.
Shortly thereafter, I left Jeanette and Jake’s house still in awe over the personal experiences I had. It was a silent ride home other than the occasional “I can’t believe that chair, or that perfume smell,” leaving me to think why things happen the way they do. We went there to experience Bogey the ghost dog, only to experience something entirely different. The Universe, Fates, God, whatever entities you believe in, have things happen for a reason. I believe there are no such things as coincidences. I may not understand them right away, but soon enough, in time, I will. I can’t wait till the next time.
